CITY OF RIJEKA

Fanum, Sti Viti, Veyth am Pflaum, Sancti
Viti, Fluvis st partus Rika, Fiume,
Rieka, Rijeka - all these are the names
for which the City of Rijeka, a city
of long, interesting and turbulent
past, was known for.
Rijeka is a Mediterranean and Central European city.
Placed along the coast of the Kvarner Bay , the most
northern part of the Adriatic Sea , at the point where
the Mediterranean Sea has made its deepest incision
into the Continent of Europe. That is why this area
is considered as a boundary, dividing the sea and land
traffic and trade routes. This geographic and political
location made this area a battle-field of different
historical events, which have essentially defined its
economic development.
 Rijeka is an important governing, administrative economic,
university, fair, business and cultural centre of the
whole area. Today it has 160,000 inhabitants (206,000
- with its metropolitan area) of which 70% are of Croatian
nationality. But, Rijeka is a city with many other
ethnic entities living together. A special importance
is given to the Italian minority, whose language and
culture have been cultivated at this area for many
centuries. All the inhabitants are linked together
to a great extent, while the differences among the
different ethnic world-views result in positive and
creative common life.
The Rijeka` s economic potentials
are one of the most promising in the
Croatian economy, open for new investments
and global development. Rijeka is a
city of entrepreneurship, a business
centre for many business partners and
foreign investors, offering them an
opportunity to invest into:
- additional capital investments
of business operators,
- new technologies,
- urban infrastructure (roads, gas
pipeline, bus terminal, Olympic-size
swimming pool, cultural institutions
and facilities, etc.),
- development projects such as shopping
centres, WTC, reconstruction of Old
Town i.e.Stari grad (ancient part
of the City of Rijeka ), multimedia
centres, free trade zones, etc.
To put it briefly, Rijeka is a city
of moderate Mediterranean climate,
a city of youth, sport, culture, tradition,
friendship and hospitality.
